News Alert!  Alicia Gonzalez wins the Houston Academics Spring 2008 Academic Merit Scholarship!!!

Dec. 2007 - The Houston Academics, Inc. National Merit Scholarship is a scholarship designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school academics.  There will be one award (1) of $500.00, non-renewable to a United States high school junior or senior who has the intention of attending college in the U.S.  In order to be eligible to apply, high school students must have a minimum g.p.a. of 3.0 and sign up for the Houston Academics, Inc. Newsletter.  To apply for this scholarship, simply do the following by the stated application deadline - January 18, 2008:

1.  Submit a written copy by email of the student's high school transcript indicating minimum g.p.a standards.
2.  Sign up to receive the Houston Academics, Inc. Newsletter by clicking here; NEWSLETTER
3.  Submit an internet ready - youtube style video of 5 mins. or less which explains in the student's own words why he or she is the most deserving of the Houston Academics, Inc. National Merit Scholarship.  The video must demonstrate the student's value of education while acknowledging how a college education will further this value.  The strength of the high school transcript, the overall creativity of the video and the total number of votes received (ratings) will determine the eventual winner of this academic scholarship.  Winners will be announced in March 2008.  Video submissions and all application materials become property of Houston Academics, Inc.  Submissions should be made by email to

Yui Hing Trina Tam
Bear Creek High School, Stockton, CA

Ranked within the top 5% of her high school graduating class, Trina Tam has excelled in all academic areas.  Winner of the State of California Assembly Scholastic Achievement Award and the recipient of the Lodi Unified School District Certificate of Recognition, Trina has earned a 4.3 GPA and serves as Treasurer and Secretary of her high school's National Honor Society.  
 

Tyler Fix (Senior)
Deer Valley High School, Glendale, Arizona

President of the Deer Valley High School National Honor Society, Valedictorian for the class of 2008, and named among "Who's Who Among American High School Students," Tyler has also excelled in sports in being named All-Region Academic Teams for swimming and Tennis (2007).  Tyler is also an Advanced Placement Scholar in Language Arts, History and Calculus AB.

Jasmine Churchill (Senior)
Owings Mills High School, Owings Mills, MD

With a 3.83 GPA in an academically rich and challenging honors-level curriculum and a member of her high school's honor roll since her freshman year, Jasmine Churchill also received an honorable mention by the State of Maryland as a Maryland Distinguished Scholar.  This summer 2007, Jasmine Churchill attended the Johns Hopkins Pre-College Summer Program with an emphasis in the sciences (biochemistry). 

Travis Lee Hornsby (Senior)
Pensacola High School, Pensacola, FL

As the Valedictorian (class of 2008) of his high school's Senior International Baccalaureate Class, Travis has positioned himself as a leader in academic achievement (straight A's in all classes in high school) as well as demonstrating an avid interest in European History (scored 5 of the AP exam in World History and Modern European History.  Travis also placed 1st in the regional Physics Jeopardy competition.

Messmer High School, Milwaukee, WI

Ranked #1 in her graduating class with a 4. 063 GPA, Martia proves that hard work and dedication are the keys to success.  As a member of the National Honor Society, and the honor roll, Martia also finds time to volunteer for several local organizations.  Martia's academic achievement in her honors-level curriculum at Messmer High School in a variety of scholastic areas including Pre-Calculus, History and English reflects her leadership and dedication to her community, her family and personal excellence.

Black College Tours Fall 2007-Spring 2008

THE 12th ANNUAL HBCU
2007 SPRING BREAK TOUR
Dates: April 1 to April 6, 2007
Based in Las Vegas, Nevada

32nd Street Theater's 12th Annual "Unity Through Knowledge" HBCU Tour to visit Clark-Atlanta, Morehouse, Morris Brown, Spelman, Fort Valley State, Alabama State, Tuskegee, and Florida A&M. The cost for the 6 day/5 night tour is $950 per student. The total cost includes round trip airfare, deluxe coach travel, hotel accommodations, guided campus tours, nightly college preparatory seminars and evening tours of historical attractions and landmarks including the King Center, Underground Atlanta, The CNN center, Centennial Olympic Park, Dexter Avenue and Ebenezer Baptist Church, The Civil Rights Memorial, George Washington Carver Museum and a visit to Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park.  Interested students will be required to pay a $200, non-refundable deposit to reserve a seat before Nov. 4th.  For more information, please contact Rev. The 22nd Annual Black College Tour

Sponsored by the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Dates: April 1- April 6, 2007

The Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is selecting students for its highly renowned Black College Tour. The tour place allows 42 high school students from Indianapolis, Indiana and surrounding areas the chance to actually visit a number of HBCUs.  Students will speak with admissions counselors and student ambassadors, and take walking tours of all the campuses. Five Socorro’s from the Chapter will serve as chaperones.

The 2007 Black College Tour will be visiting the following HBCU’s: Howard, Morgan State, Hampton, Norfolk State, Bennett, North Carolina A&T, Winston Salem State, Johnson C. Smith, Tennessee State, and Fisk. The cost is $375.00, which includes transportation, hotel, tour t-shirt, and tour portfolio. Based in Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky

  • (Tour A) Will depart on April 1st leaving out of Covington Kentucky. Tour A will include Tennessee State, Fisk, Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Oakwood, Tuskegee, Clark-Atlanta, Spelman, and Morehouse.
  • (Tour B) Will depart on April 8th 2006-April 13th
    to Clark-Atlanta, Spelman, Morehouse, Dillard, Xavier (Louisiana), Florida A&M, Jackson State, Alcorn. Travel to Memphis, Tennessee to the Lorraine Motel.
  • (Tour C) Will depart on April 8th-April 13th to Howard, Hampton, North Carolina A&T, Morgan State, Bennett, Norfolk State, Virginia Union, and Virginia State.

Cost $395.00 per Student. $175.00 per Parent/Chaperone cost per tour. This includes Luxury Charter Bus with six  television luxury seats, lodging, guided campus tour, evening tours of historical attractions and landmarks.

Spring Break Black College Tour:
Urban Leadership Institute
Based: Baltimore, MD
Sections A and B
Dates: (A) April 7, 2007- April 11, 2007 (3 days)
(B) April 9, 2007- April 13, 2007 (6 days)

These two tours are sponsored by the Urban Leadership Institute. There will be orientations, family meetings, and more. Deluxe bus, quality hotels, guided campus tours, 3 meals daily and other extras.

Tour A will include visits to: Morgan State, Bowie State, Howard, Hampton, Norfolk State, Virginia State, and Virginia Union. Amusement Park: Busch Gardens. Tour B will include visits to: North Carolina, A&T, Bennett, Shaw, Morehouse, North Carolina Central, Spelman, Clark Atlanta, and St. Augustine's. Amusement Park: Six Flags in Atlanta.

This tour is sponsored by the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church Youth Ministry. Among the schools toured will be Howard, Spelman, Morehouse, Tuskegee, Fisk, and Tennessee State. Also, there will be trips to Six Flags Amusement Park ticket, and Black College tour T-shirt.  The cost for bus and hotels is $575.00!  Payment of $200.00 due February 3, 2007, with  installments,  final payment of $175.00 due March 24, 2007. African American Future Achievers Scholarship Program


Annual awards for graduating high school seniors who have at least one parent of African American heritage. Students must live within the boundaries of a participating Ronald McDonald House Charity Chapter. Selection is based on academic achievement, financial need, and community involvement, and personal qualities.  An essay must be included with application packet. A Gift from the Heart Scholarship

Annual awards for minority graduating seniors from T.C. Williams High School (VA) who are from a single parent household and will be enrolling in full-time postsecondary studies. Selection based on academic achievement (minimum 2.0 GPA), financial need, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, and work experience.  Number of awards may vary.  Nonrenewable; but recipients are encouraged to reapply and compete annually.

Minority Educator Recruitment & Retention Scholarship


Annual awards for minority residents of Kentucky who are full-time undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in the Teaching field. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
